The Intimate Opera Company will present a screening of its March 2008 production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado
PASADENA, Calif. The steadily increasing number of music lovers who have included performances by the Intimate Opera Company on their list of Must-See Events are used to traveling to venues throughout Southern California to catch the company’s latest performance.  But on Saturday evening, November 8, when supporters arrive at Westminster Gardens’ Packard Hall in Duarte, they’ll have an opportunity to see one of the company’s most acclaimed and successful productions – The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan – not onstage but on the silver screen.  Originally presented in March 2008, under the guidance of Music Director Kristof Van Gyrspeer, Assistant Conductor at Opera Pacific, and Stage Director Mark Lamanna, The Mikado earned praise from reviewers as well as audience members.  “Maestro Van Gryspeer balances his orchestral forces well with the voices on stage, and the two choruses…do a wonderful of delivering the beautiful Sullivan score,” wrote John Farrell of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and Press-Telegram. “You can't deny the feisty spirit of the Intimate Opera cast, the sound of fine voices gathered for this production.”  Members of the cast of “fine voices” that so impressed Farrell included bass baritone Conrad Immel as the Mikado; tenor Charlie Kim as his son, Nanki-Poo; soprano Katherine Terray as Yum-Yum; and contralto Heather Henderson as Katisha.   “We’re so thrilled to be able to offer this screening,” says Intimate Opera’s founder Wendy Kikkert. “It allows those who loved our staging of The Mikado to see it again and those who missed it, a chance to rectify that.”  |
